analysis of film noir 2

Analysis of Detour..

stylistics & Codes of film noir..

Film noir cinematography 1 - is usually distorted, skewed and unpleasant to look at, especially to viewers and making them feel at unease. this reflects the noir genre.

low and high angles

deep focus

reflections, views and faces obscured through objects

use of Dutch tilts or irregular framing of shots..

Scene recreation

Review of tasks ..

What was the task?
Our task was to recreate a short clip from a movie, we worked in groups. in my group I had Kelsey, claire.fern and serina. we choose a scene from mean girls. which is shown below.. the whole idea of us creating this was to discover how editing has a huge impact when it comes down to editing scenes. I felt that having a big group meant more characters which were included in the scene, also allowing one person to film which was me. I thought we found timing was an issue when filming as some members couldn't make it on certain days which caused an effect on the filming. however I was poetically pleased with the acting.

I felt that each person really took on there roll as we did re watch the clips over and over to get it precise. I felt that the camera angles really worked effective. As there was a range. I felt that the costumes could of been more precise in which that in the originally clip the characters wear pink, I think it would of worked more well and added more of an effect to the scene. as well as making it look the same as the original clip. I also think the location should of been at a house/ bedroom as that's where the scene was located. I think it would of made it much more clearer to the audience as well as ourselves. As well as the editing I thought it created the scene.
I felt that there could of been more props used which would of made the scenes more realistic especially to the original clip. for example the photos of the book and the bed. I feel that by adding these little key props it would of made it easier to viewers to see that they are in a bedroom and at Reginas house.

overall I thought the recreation worked very effective as we accomplished what the tasks was asking. although the quality of the camera work could of been better, I thought we did very well, especially as we had a big group, which can sometimes cause collaboration on ideas and plans, however we worked very well as a team as we all was included and had a main roll in the tasks.

Foley sound tasks..

Review of tasks -
After looking at a variety of other Foley sound examples I then attempted my own. Our tasks was to record sound separately then eventually add it to our recorded scenes. I wanted choose 6 house hold chaos. I deliberately reduced the sounds on 5 scenes and included Foley sound. on scene 3 I purposely left the original sound to show the contrast and the effect that Foley sound has on a scene.

What is foley sound?

what is Foley sound??

Introduction to Foley sound..
when shooting on a location on set it simply not accurately to record the little tiny noises that come from every day life.  during filming production audio focus on the dialogue, which also can be re recorded and posted in posted in producing which is called looping or ADR, so all the little sounds which makes the scenes come alive are added in the post production stage. these sound effects can be broken into ambience which is background noise which is a psychological cue for space. sometimes recorded on location. there is also library effects these effects can pre purchased effects. which are pre recorded effects.. these often are expensive also more dangerous to produce and create. the 3rd final sound is Foley sound.. which is recorded specially for visual in film, which is called Foley..
History of Foley-
Foley comes far back from vaudeville which was influenced by the English music hall a form or theatrical variety shows vaudeville was a powerful force in the late 90's early 20's century featuring live bands, by  the 1930's vaudeville had a theatrical venue which started to loose momentum.
Foley sound-
Foley effects are sound effects added to the film during post production (after the shooting stops). They include sounds such as footsteps, clothes rustling, crockery clinking, paper folding, doors opening and slamming, punches hitting, glass breaking, etc. etc. In other words, many of the sounds that the sound recordists on set did their best to avoid recording during the shoot.
The boom operator's job is to clearly record the dialogue, and only the dialogue. At first glance it may seem odd that they add back to the soundtrack the very sounds the sound recordists tried to exclude. But it adds control. By excluding these sounds during filming and adding them in post, they have complete control over the timing, quality, and relative volume of the sound effects.by doing this they can control the intensity and volume of the sound.
How is Foley Done?
Foley is usually performed by Foley artists. Ideally they stand on a Foley stage like an area with a variety of possible surfaces and props  in a Foley studio.  which is a specialized sound studio,  though any post production sound studio will do with a little modification. The Foley artists can clearly see a screen which displays the footage they are to add sound fx to, and they perform their sound effects while watching this screen for timing. The actions they perform can include walking, running, jostling each other, rubbing their clothing, handling props, and breaking objects, all while closely observing the screen to ensure their sound fx are appropriate to the vision.
Increasingly, many simple Foley sound fx are done without Foley artists - the sound effects are stored electronically and performed by the post production sound engineer on a keyboard while watching the visual. Done poorly this type of "Foley" sounds bland and repetitive, and it is nowhere near as flexible as the real thing, but it is much cheaper than renting a Foley stage and paying Foley artists to create the Foley sound effects.
