stylistics & Codes of film noir..

Film noir cinematography 1 - is usually distorted, skewed and unpleasant to look at, especially to viewers and making them feel at unease. this reflects the noir genre.

low and high angles

deep focus





reflections, views and faces obscured through objects




use of Dutch tilts or irregular framing of shots..





sound

- film noir sound was used to complement the feeling of pessimism and foreboding that was reflected in the films.

- melancholy down beat
-use of quit and silence
-often discordant and grafting
-sudden noise
-voice over of protagonist
-sound effects, ambience of the city.
-suburbia


Editing
film noir editing follows many of the traditional crime characteristics but they are generally told non linearly

-non linear start at the end, then tell story in flashback
- often shot day for night using filters.
